They highlight risks including:

  • Wiring in older or altered homes not assessed for reverse power flow
  • Protective devices (RCDs/RCCBs) potentially failing to operate correctly

  • Unsafe or non‑standard products reaching shops before UK standards are finalised
  • Grid‑resilience issues if many flats in a block install units
  • Unclear insurance and liability responsibilities

One Australian state has already reported a fatality linked to protective‑device failure under similar conditions.

🏠 Why Many Homes Aren’t Suitable Yet

Although plug‑in solar appears simple – place a panel, plug it in – suitability depends heavily on the condition of a home’s electrical system.

Warning signs a home may need inspection include:

  • Damaged or warm sockets
  • Frequent breaker trips
  • Old fuse boxes
  • Overloaded extension leads
  • No record of recent electrical checks

☀️ Where Plug‑In Solar Does Make Sense

When installed safely and in the right homes, plug‑in solar can help reduce daytime electricity use, especially for people who are home during the day, remote workers, retirees, or families with young children.

But expectations must stay realistic: these units offset usage, they don’t power a whole home.
